What is Self-Direction?
In New York State, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) have the option to use funding through the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) to design and manage their own supports. Rather than participating solely in agency-operated programs, they can choose to arrange services that reflect their personal goals and needs.
This approach is known as Self-Direction.

• Guiding families through the development and oversight of Self-Direction budgets and services
• Providing strategic guidance on OPWDD services and transitions
• Assisting with budget monitoring, expense tracking,
and financial oversight
• Educating participants and planning teams on implementing the Self-Direction plan effectively
